Composite Fillings

Composite fillings, also called tooth-colored fillings, are used to repair teeth affected by cavities, decay, cracks, fractures, and other minor damage. The affected portion of the tooth is removed, and the remaining tooth structure is restored with a durable composite material.

Unlike traditional silver-colored amalgam fillings, composite fillings are designed to closely match the natural color of your teeth. This makes tooth-colored fillings a popular option for restoring both front and back teeth while maintaining a natural-looking smile.

Composite fillings can restore the shape, strength, and function of a damaged tooth while treating areas affected by decay. Although fillings are durable, they are not permanent and may eventually need to be repaired or replaced. Regular dental care can help maintain your fillings and overall oral health.

When Are Composite Fillings Needed?

Your dentist may recommend a composite filling to repair a tooth affected by:

  • Dental cavities and tooth decay
  • Chipped teeth
  • Cracked or fractured teeth
  • Worn tooth surfaces
  • Minor damage or loss of tooth structure
  • Small spaces between certain teeth
  • Cosmetic imperfections that can be addressed with bonding or composite material

The appropriate treatment depends on the location and extent of the damage. During your dental examination, your dentist can determine whether a filling or another restoration is needed.

Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings

Composite fillings offer several benefits when restoring damaged or decayed teeth:

  • Natural-looking tooth color
  • Can closely match surrounding teeth
  • Restore the shape and function of damaged teeth
  • Can be used on both front and back teeth
  • Require removal of only the affected tooth structure
  • Can improve the appearance of visible restorations

Composite fillings provide both restorative and cosmetic benefits, making them a versatile option for treating teeth affected by decay or minor damage.

Composite Fillings vs. Amalgam Fillings

There are several materials that can be used to restore a tooth. Composite resin is tooth-colored and can be matched to the surrounding enamel, while traditional amalgam fillings have a metallic appearance.

The best filling material depends on factors such as the location of the tooth, the amount of tooth structure affected, your oral health, and your treatment goals. Your dentist can explain the available options and recommend the appropriate restoration for your tooth.

Are Composite Fillings Right for You?

Composite fillings are commonly used to treat cavities and minor damage to teeth. They may be appropriate when enough healthy tooth structure remains to support a filling.

If a tooth has extensive decay, a large fracture, or significant loss of tooth structure, a filling may not provide enough support. In these situations, your dentist may recommend another restoration, such as a dental crown.

A dental examination is the best way to determine which treatment is appropriate for your tooth and overall oral health.

What Does Getting a Composite Filling Involve?

Composite fillings can often be completed in a single appointment. The exact process depends on the condition of the tooth and the extent of the decay or damage.

1. Dental Examination

Your dentist will examine the affected tooth and surrounding structures to determine the cause and extent of the problem. Dental X-rays may be used when necessary to evaluate decay or damage that cannot be seen during a visual examination.

2. Numbing The Tooth

A local anesthetic may be used to numb the tooth and surrounding area before treatment, helping keep you comfortable while the affected portion of the tooth is removed.

3. Removing Decay or Damage

The decayed or damaged portion of the tooth is carefully removed. The remaining tooth structure is cleaned and prepared to receive the composite filling.

4. Placing The Composite Material

The tooth-colored composite material is applied to the prepared area. The material is carefully shaped to restore the tooth’s natural contours and appearance.

5. Hardening & Shaping The Filling

A specialized dental light is used to harden the composite material. Your dentist then shapes and adjusts the filling to restore the tooth’s normal function and fit comfortably with your bite.

6. Polishing & Final Adjustments

The completed filling is polished and checked for proper fit. Any necessary adjustments are made to help ensure a comfortable, natural-looking restoration.

How to Care for Composite Fillings

Good oral hygiene is important for protecting your fillings and the natural tooth structure around them. Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss regularly, and maintain routine dental examinations and professional cleanings.

Limiting frequent exposure to sugary foods and drinks can also help reduce the risk of additional tooth decay. Avoid using your teeth to bite hard objects, and let your dentist know if you regularly clench or grind your teeth, as excessive force can place stress on dental restorations.

Regular dental visits allow your dentist to monitor existing fillings and identify signs of wear, leakage, or additional decay before they become more significant problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are composite fillings the same as tooth-colored fillings?

Yes. “Composite fillings” and “tooth-colored fillings” are commonly used to describe fillings made from composite resin that are designed to blend with the natural color of your teeth.

How long does it take to get a composite filling?

Many composite fillings can be completed during a single dental appointment. Treatment time depends on the number of teeth being restored and the size and location of the fillings.

Do composite fillings look natural?

Yes. Composite resin can be matched to the color of your natural teeth, allowing the completed filling to blend more discreetly with the surrounding enamel.

Are composite fillings permanent?

Composite fillings are designed to provide long-lasting results, but they are not permanent. They can eventually wear down or become damaged and may need to be repaired or replaced.

Can composite fillings fix cracked or chipped teeth?

Composite material can repair certain minor chips, cracks, and areas of lost tooth structure. More extensive fractures may require a different restoration, such as a dental crown. Your dentist can evaluate the tooth and recommend the appropriate treatment.

Do composite fillings hurt?

The tooth and surrounding area can be numbed before treatment to help keep you comfortable. Some temporary sensitivity may occur after a filling is placed, particularly when consuming hot or cold foods and beverages.

Jennifer Acker is reason enough for everybody and anybody to go to this establishment. I can almost say I look forward to seeing the dentist because of her attention to detail, professionalism, yet playful, calming demeanor. As a matter of fact, the entire place is extremely professional and very calming. And this is coming from someone who has white coat syndrome, which causes my blood pressure to go through the roof every time I even step foot in a doctors office. Seriously. If you’re looking to have a pleasant experience at the dentist, this is where you go.

Normally, a trip to the dentist feels like the beginning of a horror movie: cold lights, buzzing drills, and childhood flashbacks. But this clinic completely changed my mind. From the front desk to the doctors and assistants — everyone is so friendly that you almost want to stop by just for a coffee and a chat. Dr. Shuck is a whole story on his own. Smiling, patient, and with a fantastic sense of humor. At the same time, he’s a true professional: he works thoroughly, quickly, and with such care that even my inner “I’m terrified of dentists” voice said, “Okay, let’s give this a try.” Hygienist Lissi is out of this world. I’ve been getting cleanings for years, in different cities and even countries, but the cleaning she gave me was hands down the best I’ve ever had. So gentle, comfortable, and effective — I actually walked out feeling like my teeth were shining brighter than the lamp in the treatment room. Bottom line: the clinic is amazing, the staff is golden, and the experience was nothing but positive. If there were a rating for “dentistry without fear and pain,” I’d give them 100 out of 10. Highly recommend — even to those who fear dentists more than horror movies.
Response from the owner:Thank you, Nina! We’re so glad Dr. Shuck and Lissi made your visit comfortable and enjoyable. At The Art of Dentistry, we’re proud to provide gentle dental care in Virginia Beach — from routine cleanings to cosmetic dentistry. We appreciate your recommendation and look forward to seeing you again!

Do you hate the shot at the dentist? Same. I used to dread it… until I met Dr. Shuck! Somehow he makes it completely painless (I was poked three times today and didn’t feel a single pinch). He’s fast, friendly, cracks jokes to make the time fly, and his work is flawless every time. I leave every appointment feeling well cared for and at ease. Thank you, Dr. Shuck!!
Response from the owner:Thank you, Karina! We’re so glad Dr. Shuck made your visit painless and stress-free. At The Art of Dentistry, we’re dedicated to gentle dental care in Virginia Beach that keeps every patient comfortable and smiling!
As new patients, my daughter and I were treated well from start to finish! I did not feel like a stranger. All staff were friendly, thorough, and knowledgeable. Not only were they kind to us, but also to one another. We were seen on time for our appointments. The technology was current. The physical space was clean and inviting. The dentist and hygienist provided us with what we needed to make informed decisions regarding future care. UPDATE: I had to have an old root canal removed today. Yet again, everyone was wonderful. The attentiveness, patience. skill, and compassion demonstrated by everyone involved was deeply appreciated.
Response from the owner:Thank you for the wonderful review.

I have seen several of the hygienists and they are all very good and thorough. I've seen both Dr. Shuck and Dr. Dorman, and have been very pleased with my dental care. Both docs have great personalities and are very personable. They also listen to the patient which I have found to be in short supply in the dental field. Really a great office to receive your dental care.
Response from the owner:Thank you, John! We’re so glad to hear you’ve had a great experience with our entire team. At The Art of Dentistry in Virginia Beach, we pride ourselves on providing thorough, personalized care—and truly listening to our patients. 5 years later and they are still the best! Had a molar filling from 30 years ago break down, so another crown was needed. This was a one-visit-fix! Digital measurements were taken, the molar was prepped to be a post for the new crown, and the new crown was fabricated in the office, placed and ready to go. No off adjust on, off adjust back on, all done in one seamless event. Dr. Dorfman and assist were kind, gentle, and responsive. Additional staff in the office and everyone was friendly, smiling, and the vibe was focused on taking care of people. Highly recommend! Terrible tooth/jaw pain increasing over a couple of days. The folks here got me an appointment within 24 hours. At the appointment, Dr. Dorfman and Jenny methodically went through all the potential causes, settled on the least invasive of checking/adjusting a crown, and proceeded to do so. Very gentle handling. I left with a primary plan, and a secondary plan. Great service!
Response from the owner:Thank you, Theresa! We’re so glad to hear your visit went smoothly and that you felt cared for throughout. Our team at The Art of Dentistry is proud to provide same-day crowns and gentle, expert care every time. We truly appreciate your continued trust and kind words!
