What Is Considered a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is a problem involving your teeth, gums, or mouth that requires prompt professional evaluation to relieve significant discomfort, address possible infection, or prevent further damage. Some problems need immediate attention, while others can be assessed and scheduled according to their severity.

Contact a dentist promptly if you experience any of the following:

Severe or persistent toothache:

  • Ongoing, throbbing, or worsening tooth pain may indicate decay, inflammation, a damaged tooth, or infection.

Chipped, cracked, or broken tooth:

  • Damage can expose sensitive inner tooth structures and make the tooth more vulnerable to additional injury.

Knocked-out or displaced tooth:

  • A tooth that has been completely knocked out or moved out of position requires urgent assessment.

Swollen or infected gums:

  • Localized swelling, a gum bump, drainage, or a persistent bad taste can indicate an infection.

Lost filling or damaged crown:

  • A missing filling or broken dental crown can leave the underlying tooth exposed and sensitive.

Painful wisdom tooth:

  • Pain, swelling, or irritation around a wisdom tooth may require prompt dental evaluation.

Dental sensitivity that suddenly worsens:

  • New or intense sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure can indicate an underlying dental problem.

If you are unsure whether your symptoms require an emergency dental appointment, call our Virginia Beach office. Our team can discuss your concerns and help you determine the appropriate next step.

Best experience I’ve ever had at a dentist

This was the best experience I’ve ever had at a dentist office. The team is so warm and welcoming! I had problems with bleeding gums and just as they said, the bleeding stopped after I went to them and they took such great care of me during my cleaning. I also had a small gap in my bottom teeth that was bugging me and it went away two weeks later because my gums were so healthy from the cleaning. I am just so impressed! I have healthier gums, cleaner, whiter teeth and by far felt the most amazing I’ve ever felt leaving the dentist office! I highly recommend them 🥰

The best dental experience I've ever had!

This is by far the best dental experience I have ever had. The hygenist was pleasant and thorough when I got my cleaning. Then I had to get two caps and two filling redone. I never had caps or any other extensive dental work. I have had two caps, done, and two fillings redone over the past month. The drilling was quick, the caps are perfect, and so are the fillings. Recovery is quick and painless as well. I never even felt the needle go in for numbing. During the break waiting for the cap to be made, I fell asleep in the dental chair, that is how relaxing this place is. For a dental visit, it was the best I have ever experienced. I recommend them 100%!!!

The experience was nothing but positive

Normally, a trip to the dentist feels like the beginning of a horror movie: cold lights, buzzing drills, and childhood flashbacks. But this clinic completely changed my mind. From the front desk to the doctors and assistants — everyone is so friendly that you almost want to stop by just for a coffee and a chat. Dr. Shuck is a whole story on his own. Smiling, patient, and with a fantastic sense of humor. At the same time, he’s a true professional: he works thoroughly, quickly, and with such care that even my inner “I’m terrified of dentists” voice said, “Okay, let’s give this a try.” Hygienist Lissi is out of this world. I’ve been getting cleanings for years, in different cities and even countries, but the cleaning she gave me was hands down the best I’ve ever had. So gentle, comfortable, and effective — I actually walked out feeling like my teeth were shining brighter than the lamp in the treatment room. Bottom line: the clinic is amazing, the staff is golden, and the experience was nothing but positive. If there were a rating for “dentistry without fear and pain,” I’d give them 100 out of 10. Highly recommend — even to those who fear dentists more than horror movies.

Emergency Dental Services

The right emergency dental treatment depends on what caused the problem, the extent of the damage, and the condition of your teeth and gums. At The Art of Dentistry, emergency care focuses on evaluating the issue and identifying an appropriate treatment plan.

Emergency Toothache Treatment

Tooth pain may result from a cavity, a cracked tooth, inflammation inside the tooth, or an infection. Pain that disappears temporarily does not necessarily mean the underlying problem has resolved.

During an emergency dental visit, your dentist will evaluate the affected area and determine what may be causing the discomfort. Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may involve a filling, a crown, or another procedure to address the source of the pain.

Broken, Chipped, or Cracked Teeth

A tooth can crack, chip, or break after biting something hard, sustaining an injury, or experiencing existing tooth weakness. Even a small fracture may cause sensitivity or discomfort, while a more extensive break can affect the inner structure of the tooth.

Emergency dental treatment depends on the location and severity of the damage. Your dentist will assess whether the tooth can be repaired and explain the available options. Depending on the circumstances, treatment may include a filling or a dental crown.

Lost Fillings and Broken Crowns

When a filling falls out or a dental crown becomes loose or damaged, the exposed tooth may become sensitive to temperature, pressure, or food. Leaving the area untreated can increase the risk of further damage.

An emergency dental evaluation can determine whether the restoration can be repaired, replaced, or requires additional treatment. If you have lost a filling or damaged a crown, call our office rather than attempting to permanently reattach or repair it yourself.

Dental Infections and Abscessed Teeth

A dental abscess is a collection of pus caused by a bacterial infection. Symptoms may include persistent tooth pain, localized swelling, tenderness, drainage, or an unpleasant taste in the mouth. Some infections can progress and cause more serious complications if treatment is delayed.

Contact a dentist promptly if you suspect a dental infection. Treatment depends on the source and severity of the infection and may require drainage or treatment of the affected tooth.

Antibiotics alone do not resolve every dental infection, and not every dental infection requires antibiotics. Your dentist will determine the appropriate course of care.

Important: Facial or neck swelling accompanied by difficulty breathing or swallowing requires emergency medical attention. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Knocked-Out or Injured Teeth

A knocked-out permanent tooth is a time-sensitive dental emergency. Prompt professional care may improve the chance of saving it, although the outcome depends on the injury and how quickly treatment begins.

If a permanent tooth is knocked out, pick it up by the crown rather than the root. If it is dirty, gently rinse it with milk or saline, if available, without scrubbing it. If possible, keep the tooth moist in milk or an appropriate tooth-preservation solution and seek immediate dental care. Do not force the tooth back into its socket.

Call our office for guidance as soon as the injury occurs. If the injury involves significant facial trauma, suspected jaw fracture, uncontrolled bleeding, or other serious injuries, seek emergency medical care.

Emergency Wisdom Tooth Pain

Pain around a wisdom tooth can occur when the tooth is impacted, partially erupted, or surrounded by inflamed gum tissue. Symptoms may include tenderness, swelling, difficulty chewing, or discomfort toward the back of the jaw.

A dental evaluation can help identify the cause and determine whether treatment is necessary. Because wisdom tooth pain can have several causes, avoid assuming that extraction is always required. Your dentist can assess the affected area and discuss appropriate options.

What Should You Do During a Dental Emergency?

Knowing what to do before your appointment can help protect the affected area and reduce the risk of additional injury.

  1. Call a dentist promptly. Explain your symptoms, when they began, and whether you have pain, swelling, bleeding, or visible damage.
  2. Avoid aggravating the affected tooth. Choose soft foods and avoid chewing on the injured side.
  3. Keep the area clean. Gently rinse your mouth with warm water. If food is trapped between teeth, carefully floss rather than using sharp objects.
  4. Use a cold compress for swelling. Apply it to the outside of your cheek for short intervals.
  5. Follow professional guidance. Ask your dentist what steps are appropriate for your particular injury or symptoms.

Do not place aspirin directly against a tooth or gum, as it can damage the tissue. Home care may provide temporary comfort, but it cannot replace an examination when a dental emergency is suspected.

Can an Emergency Dentist See You the Same Day?

Same-day emergency dental appointments may be available depending on the nature of the problem and the office schedule. Calling as soon as possible gives our team an opportunity to understand your symptoms and discuss available appointment times.

Please call before coming in to confirm availability. Our office does not advertise 24-hour or weekend emergency service. If you develop a serious medical emergency outside our operating hours, seek appropriate emergency medical care.
