PORCELAIN CROWN (CAPS) SERVICES
Porcelain Crown (Cap)
A porcelain crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size. A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations.
Although there are several types of crowns, porcelain (tooth colored crown) are the most popular, because they resemble your natural teeth. They are highly durable and will last many years, but like most dental restorations, they may eventually need to be replaced. Porcelain crowns are made to match the shape, size, and color or your teeth giving you a natural, long-lasting beautiful smile.
Reasons to get a porcelain crown:
- Broken or fractured teeth.
- Cosmetic enhancement.
- Decayed teeth.
- Fractured fillings.
- Large fillings.
- Tooth has a root canal.
What does getting a porcelain crown involve?
Because of our CEREC computer and CAD-CAM milling unit we can usually deliver crowns in one appointment. First, Dr. Horwitz or Dorfman will us local anesthesia to get your tooth numb. Once you are sufficiently numb, decay will be removed from your tooth. Your tooth will then be reduced slightly in all dimensions. Once the tooth preparation is complete, the dentist will scan your tooth with our CEREC digital scanner.
We will then design your crown on our CEREC software. This information will be sent to our in office CAD-CAM milling unit where your crown will be made. We will custom stain your crown to match your existing teeth. The crown will then be placed in the kiln where it will cook for about 20 minutes. Once it has cooled your crown will be cemented into place. The whole process usually takes around two hours.

Porcelain Crowns in Virginia Beach
COSMETIC & RESTORATIVE DENTISTRY
Porcelain Crowns
A porcelain crown is a custom-made restoration that covers the entire visible portion of a damaged or weakened tooth. Porcelain crowns can restore the tooth’s shape, strength, function, and appearance while providing a natural-looking result that blends with your smile.
At The Art of Dentistry, porcelain crowns are designed to match the size, shape, and color of your surrounding teeth. With CEREC® technology and in-office CAD/CAM milling, many patients can receive a custom porcelain crown in a single appointment.
What Are Porcelain Crowns?
Porcelain crowns, also called dental caps, are restorations that fit over a prepared tooth to protect and strengthen it. They can be used when a tooth has too much damage or weakened structure to be effectively restored with a filling.
Because porcelain can closely resemble natural tooth enamel, porcelain crowns are commonly used for both restorative and cosmetic dental treatment. Your dentist can determine whether a porcelain crown is appropriate based on the condition of the tooth and your overall dental needs.
When Are Porcelain Crowns Needed?
A porcelain crown may be recommended when a tooth has significant damage or needs additional support. Common reasons for a dental crown include:
- Broken or fractured teeth
- Teeth weakened by extensive decay
- Large or failing fillings
- Fractured fillings
- Teeth that have undergone root canal treatment
- Worn or weakened tooth structure
- Cosmetic concerns involving the shape or appearance of a tooth
A crown can help protect the remaining tooth structure while restoring normal chewing function and appearance.
Benefits of Porcelain Crowns
Porcelain crowns offer several benefits for patients who need to restore damaged or weakened teeth:
Natural appearance
Porcelain can be matched to the color and appearance of your surrounding teeth.
Strength & Protection
A crown helps reinforce a tooth that has lost significant structure.
Custom Fit
Each crown is designed specifically for the tooth being restored.
Restored Function
Crowns can help restore normal biting and chewing.
Versatile Treatment
Porcelain crowns can address both functional and cosmetic concerns.
CEREC Technology
Many crowns can be designed and fabricated in our office during a single appointment.
Are Porcelain Crowns Right for You?
Porcelain crowns may be appropriate if you have a tooth that is significantly damaged, weakened, heavily restored, or otherwise requires more protection than a filling can provide.
During your consultation, your dentist will evaluate the tooth and discuss your treatment options. In some cases, a filling, inlay, onlay, veneer, dental bridge, or another restoration may be more appropriate.
How Does The Porcelain crown process work?
At The Art of Dentistry, CEREC® technology allows us to complete many porcelain crown treatments in one visit. The exact process depends on your tooth and treatment needs, but typically includes the following steps.
Dental Evaluation
Your dentist examines the tooth and determines whether a porcelain crown is the appropriate restoration. The tooth, surrounding structures, and your overall oral health are evaluated before treatment begins.
Tooth Preparation
Local anesthesia is used to keep you comfortable during treatment. Any decay or damaged tooth structure is removed, and the tooth is carefully shaped to provide room for the crown.
Digital Scanning
Once the tooth has been prepared, a CEREC digital scanner captures detailed images of the tooth. Digital impressions allow the crown to be designed specifically for your tooth without the need for traditional impression materials.
Crown Design
The digital information is used with CEREC CAD/CAM software to design your custom porcelain crown. The restoration is shaped to fit the prepared tooth and complement your surrounding teeth.
In-Office Crown Fabrication
The design is sent to our in-office CAD/CAM milling unit, where the porcelain crown is fabricated. The crown can then be customized to coordinate with the color and appearance of your natural teeth.
Crown Placement
After the crown has been completed and checked for fit and appearance, it is bonded or cemented into place. Your dentist makes any necessary adjustments so the restored tooth functions comfortably with your bite.

Porcelain Crowns vs. Traditional Dental Crowns
Porcelain crowns are a type of dental crown designed to provide both strength and a natural appearance. Depending on the tooth being treated, your dentist may recommend different crown materials based on factors such as the tooth’s location, amount of remaining tooth structure, bite, and cosmetic goals.
CEREC technology can also allow many porcelain crowns to be completed in a single visit rather than requiring a temporary crown and a separate appointment for final placement.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are porcelain crowns the same as dental caps?
Yes. A dental crown is commonly called a dental cap because it covers or “caps” the visible portion of a prepared tooth.
Can a porcelain crown be completed in one visit?
Many porcelain crowns can be completed in one visit using CEREC® technology. Your tooth is digitally scanned, the crown is designed and milled in the office, and the finished restoration is placed during the same appointment when appropriate.
Are porcelain crowns good for broken teeth?
A porcelain crown may be recommended for a broken or fractured tooth when enough healthy tooth structure remains to support a crown. Your dentist will evaluate the extent of the damage before recommending treatment.
Can a porcelain crown be used after a root canal?
Yes. A tooth that has undergone root canal treatment may require a crown to restore and protect the remaining tooth structure. Your dentist will determine whether a crown is appropriate based on the condition of the tooth.
How long does it take to get a porcelain crown?
With CEREC® technology, many porcelain crowns can be completed in a single appointment. The treatment generally takes about two hours, although the exact time varies depending on the tooth and treatment required.
How long do porcelain crowns last?
Porcelain crowns are designed to provide long-term restoration, but no crown lasts forever. Proper oral hygiene, regular dental care, bite forces, and the condition of the underlying tooth can all affect how long a crown remains functional.
