HOME DENTAL CARE SERVICES IN VIRGINIA BEACH
A beautiful, healthy smile that lasts a lifetime is our ultimate goal when treating patients in Hampton Roads. Your personal home care plays a crucial role in achieving that goal. It begins with eating balanced meals, reducing the number of snacks you consume, and using dental aids properly to control the plaque and bacteria that cause dental disease.
Key Points for Home Dental Care
Tooth Brushing – Brush your teeth at least twice a day (especially before going to bed) with an ADA-approved soft-bristle brush and fluoride toothpaste.
-
Position the brush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and gently brush using a small, circular motion. Always ensure that you feel the bristles on your gums.
-
Brush the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces of each tooth.
-
Use the tip of the brush to clean the inside of the front teeth.
-
Don’t forget to brush your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen your breath.
Electric toothbrushes are also highly recommended. They are easy to use and can remove plaque effectively. Simply place the bristles on your gums and teeth, letting the brush do the work, cleaning several teeth at a time.
Flossing – Daily flossing is the best way to clean between your teeth and under the gumline. Flossing helps prevent plaque buildup, which can damage the gums, teeth, and bone.
-
Cut 12-16 inches (30-40 cm) of dental floss and wrap it around your middle fingers, leaving about 2 inches (5 cm) between your hands.
-
Using your thumbs and forefingers, gently guide the floss between your teeth with a sawing motion.
-
Curve the floss into a “C” shape around each tooth and under the gumline. Gently move the floss up and down to clean the sides of each tooth.
Floss holders are recommended if you have difficulty using conventional floss.
Rinsing – It’s important to rinse your mouth with water after brushing and after meals if you are unable to brush. If you use an over-the-counter mouthwash, consult your dentist or hygienist to ensure it’s suitable for your needs.
Use other dental aids as recommended by your dentist or dental hygienist. Interdental brushes, rubber tip stimulators, tongue cleaners, irrigation devices, fluoride, medicated rinses, and other tools can play a vital role in maintaining good dental home care.
